Veterans Day

Today, Veterans Day is designated to commemorate all living and deceased veterans who heeded the call of duty. That would include those missing in action, our wounded warriors, former prisoners of war and millions of veterans who have served both in war and peace.  We send our love and gratitude to our Veterans and their families, today and every day.  We all know friends, coworkers, students and family who have served.  Some of our CW professors and students have served.  Today we show our respect for those who walk among us, and those who have perished. My Uncle “Mac” Sutkowski was a decorated veteran of World War II having proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  At 19-years-old he was the tail-gunner on a B-26 bomber.  His plane was shot down over Normandy, France, and he bailed out of his burning plane with shrapnel lodged in his thigh.  He parachuted into a field where he was picked up by members of the French underground movement and brought by a horse-drawn cart to a farmhouse in the village of Cernay to the home of French Resistance couple, Jean and Renee Renault.  While he was listed as Missing in Action, he felt the worst part of his ordeal was the frustration in not being able to inform his family he was alive.

My Uncle Fred Blovat was also with the Air Force and a spy who ran information behind enemy lines, we found out many, many years later.  He never mentioned one word of his bravery and service to us as children.  I also have several cousins who have served or continue to serve with great patriotism.  This activity and devotion is not without a toll to themselves and their families.

Please keep all of our veterans in your good thoughts and prayers every day.   The enormity of sacrifice and bravery they have displayed is incomprehensible to most of us.

Please welcome home and thank a Veteran today.
