I ran into two of our students and I asked them if they had voted yet today. Neither one had, and I encouraged them to exercise their privilege to vote. We had a great conversation. I am sure, for those of you who have regular interactions with students, that they have many questions, wonder if it really matters if they participate, and puzzle about how they should decide who to vote for. They have lots of great ideas as well. I encourage you to discuss in class today, or if you have the opportunity to talk with students, to please do so. I am sure it will be an enriching conversation for you as well as them. Of course, they asked me who to vote for and I would not offer opinions, just a reflection on what is important to them. Then they started to really begin to shape their ideas and opinions. It was great to witness that happening.
I am forwarding this email from Governor Cuomo (below) as it includes a link of voting locations in NY State. As the governor said, we have a chance to make history, every time we vote, and that it is not only right, it is a responsibility that we all share. We stand on the shoulders of those who fought to make this country the wonderful place that many seek out and continue to find refuge.
Thanks in advance!
Mary Beth Del Balzo
Dear Mary Beth,
New York is a state with a history of embracing our diversity, fighting for justice, and leading the nation in expanding opportunity. Other states look to us to set the example.
Today we have the chance to choose the path forward not just for New York, but for our nation. Voting is not just a right – it is a collective responsibility we all share.
Polls are open now – find out where to vote by clicking here.
On this Election Day, I urge you to be an active citizen. Honor those who fought for your right – and others who were once chastised or ignored because they had none.
Mary Beth, join me and millions of our fellow New Yorkers in voting today.
Today New York will make history. Be a part of it. Vote.
Sincerely,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
